A handle or lock is stiff and getting worse

A key needs force to turn, a handle springs back slowly, or the door has to be pushed hard before the lock engages. It is getting worse. Locks rarely fail suddenly — they get stiff first, and that is the time to fix them.

01LIKELY CAUSES

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.

  • Door or frame misalignment so the latch rubs the keep

    Latch catches the keep plate; door must be pushed to lock.

  • Worn or dusty lock mechanism

    Stiffness with the door open; mechanism dirty or worn.

  • Corroded external lock or cylinder

    External door exposed to weather; corrosion in the cylinder.

02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS

What you can safely check.

  • Try the lock with the door open — is it still stiff?
  • Check whether the latch lines up with the keep when the door closes.
  • Avoid oil-based sprays in cylinders; they attract dust.
  • Do not force a key that will not turn — it can snap.

03WHAT WE MEASURE

We check alignment between latch and keep, test the mechanism with the door open, and inspect the cylinder. The repair addresses the cause rather than lubricating a lock that is misaligned.

Villas have external doors to gardens and terraces exposed to dust and heat, and heavy doors that drop slightly over time. Both make locks stiff long before they fail.

    The latch is rubbing.

  2. Clean, service or replace the mechanism

    The lock itself is worn or dirty.

  3. Replace the cylinder

    The cylinder is corroded or worn.
