Damp wall behind a water feature
The wall a fountain or water feature is built against — or the room behind it — stays damp, shows salt marks or peeling paint. The feature may also need topping up more often.
Waterproofing
Active ingress during rain is prioritised. Tracing and permanent repair are scheduled once the source is identified.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
No waterproof barrier between feature and wall
Moisture readings high on the wall face behind the feature.
Leaking feature basin or pipework
Level loss with the pump off or on.
Splash and spray reaching the wall
Damp pattern follows the spray zone.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Turn the feature off for several days and watch whether the wall dries.
- Check the feature’s water loss.
- Look for splash reaching the wall.
- Keep electrics near the feature clear of water.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We monitor moisture with the feature on and off, test the basin and pipes for leaks, and inspect the junction between feature and wall. That separates splash, leak and missing barrier.
04IN A VILLA
Villa courtyards and gardens often have fountains built directly against boundary or house walls, sometimes without a tanked separation. Water tracks into blockwork and appears on the other side.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
Water in the wall damages paint and render and can reach interior finishes.
Reduce splash and adjust the feature
Spray is the cause.
Repair basin or pipe leaks
The feature leaks.
Install a waterproof barrier
The feature is built against the wall without one.
06Typical villa waterproofing work
Quoted after survey — always
Cost is driven almost entirely by what the tracing finds and how much has to be lifted to reach it. We do not price waterproofing over the phone, because a number given before the source is located is a guess.
07QUESTIONS
- Can the feature stay where it is?
- Usually, with proper waterproofing behind it.
- Why is the room inside damp?
- Water tracks through the wall from the feature.
- Does turning it off help?
- It confirms the link and stops further wetting.
- Is this the same as planter damp?
- Similar; both need separation from the structure.
