Damp on the wall behind an upstairs bathroom
A damp patch appears on the wall in the room next to an upstairs bathroom, or on the ceiling below it, often worse after showers. Water is escaping from the bathroom — through a failed seal, membrane or pipe joint.
Waterproofing
Active ingress during rain is prioritised. Tracing and permanent repair are scheduled once the source is identified.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Failed shower tray seal or grout
Damp worsens after showering; water test on the shower area reproduces it.
Failed waterproofing membrane under tiles
Damp persists even with sealant renewed; membrane failure suspected from pattern.
Leaking waste or supply joint in the wall or floor
Damp present without shower use; pressure or flow test isolates a pipe.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Note whether damp appears only after showers, or all the time.
- Check sealant and grout around the shower and bath for gaps.
- Stop using the suspect shower for a few days and see if it dries.
- Look for loose or hollow-sounding tiles.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We map moisture readings around the wet area, test the shower, bath and basin separately, and pressure-test supply pipes. Isolating each source in turn tells us whether it is sealant, membrane or pipework before anything is opened.
04IN A VILLA
Villa bathrooms sit above living rooms, so a small leak shows up on a finished ceiling or wall below. Several bathrooms on one floor make it important to identify which one — and which element — is leaking.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
Water soaks walls and ceilings below, damaging finishes and encouraging mould.
Renew sealant and grout
The leak is at surface seals.
Repair the waste or supply joint
A pipe joint is leaking.
Strip and rewaterproof the wet area
The membrane has failed.
06Typical villa waterproofing work
Quoted after survey — always
Cost is driven almost entirely by what the tracing finds and how much has to be lifted to reach it. We do not price waterproofing over the phone, because a number given before the source is located is a guess.
07QUESTIONS
- Will the bathroom need retiling?
- Only if the membrane beneath has failed. Many leaks are at sealant or pipe joints.
- How do you avoid breaking tiles unnecessarily?
- By testing each possible source separately before opening anything.
