Internal door will not latch

The door swings shut but does not click closed, or only latches when you push it hard or lift the handle. It may drift open on its own when the AC starts or when another door in the house is opened, and you may see scrape marks on the frame around the strike plate.

01LIKELY CAUSES

02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS

What you can safely check.

  • Look for scrape marks around the strike plate.
  • Check hinge screws for looseness.
  • Note if it began after a hot spell.
  • Avoid slamming the door to close it.

03WHAT WE MEASURE

We check the door’s alignment in the frame — the gaps at the head and sides tell us whether it has dropped — then the hinge fixings, and finally the latch and strike plate position. Fixing the reason the door moved comes first, because a strike plate adjusted around a dropping door only holds until it drops further.

04IN A VILLA

Villa internal doors are often tall, solid and heavy, and they hang in large rooms where AC creates pressure differences between spaces. That pressure pushes doors against their latches, and the weight of the leaf works hinge screws loose faster than in a typical apartment door.
