Shower or wet room leaking to the room below
A stain appears on the ceiling below an upstairs bathroom, growing after showers and drying when the shower is not used. Grout in the shower may be cracked or dark.
Waterproofing
Active ingress during rain is prioritised. Tracing and permanent repair are scheduled once the source is identified.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Floor membrane failure in the shower area
Flood test of the shower floor reproduces the stain.
Leaking drain connection
Leak with water poured directly into the drain.
Failed upstand at the shower edge
Water escapes at the edge or threshold.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Stop using that shower until checked.
- Check grout and sealant around the shower.
- Note whether the stain grows only after showers.
- Run the basin and bath separately to see if they affect it.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We test the shower in stages — tray or floor, drain, walls, screen seals — while monitoring the ceiling below. That shows which part leaks, so repair can be targeted.
04IN A VILLA
Villa bathrooms often have walk-in showers with linear drains and frameless screens, which demand careful waterproofing at edges and drains. Several upstairs bathrooms sit over living spaces.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
Ongoing leaks damage ceilings, electrics and the slab, and encourage mould.
Repair drain connection
The drain leaks.
Reseal and regrout
Surface joints are failing.
Relay the shower floor membrane
The membrane has failed.
06Typical villa waterproofing work
Quoted after survey — always
Cost is driven almost entirely by what the tracing finds and how much has to be lifted to reach it. We do not price waterproofing over the phone, because a number given before the source is located is a guess.
07QUESTIONS
- Can regrouting fix it?
- Only if grout is the path; often the membrane is involved.
- Is it a pipe leak?
- If it only appears after showers, it is usually the shower area.
- Do tiles have to come up?
- If the membrane has failed, yes in that area.
- Can we use the bath?
- Test it separately; it may be unaffected.
