The drawer catches or will not close fully
A drawer that used to close smoothly now catches partway, needs a shove to go the last bit, or stops short of the front and will not sit shut. It may sit slightly open, or scrape as it moves, and the contents rattle when it is forced. The drawer box is rarely the problem — it is usually the runner, the guide or a front that has shifted.
Carpentry
Scheduled work. A door or lock that will not secure is prioritised.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
A runner that has come loose or worn
The drawer moves unevenly or drops on one side as it runs in and out.
Debris or a small object fallen into the runner
The drawer catches at the same point every time, as if something is in the way.
A warped or swollen drawer front or box
The drawer binds against the opening, usually worse in humid months.
A guide block or stop that has shifted
The drawer runs out of line and no longer sits square in the opening.
An overloaded or misaligned drawer
The drawer is heavy or lopsided, so it drags on one runner.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Note where it catches — the same point every time suggests an obstruction, an uneven drag suggests a runner.
- Empty the drawer and see whether it closes smoothly when unloaded.
- Look for anything fallen into the runner or behind the drawer box.
- Avoid forcing it shut, which bends runners and loosens the front.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We run the drawer in and out, empty and loaded, and watch where it binds. The pattern of the catch — a fixed obstruction, a dropped side or a bowed front — points at the runner, the guide or the timber itself. The drawer is checked square against its opening before anything is adjusted, so the fix goes to the part that has actually moved.
04IN A VILLA
Kitchen and wardrobe drawers in a villa take the same humidity swings as the doors and the carcasses around them. A drawer that closed perfectly in winter can bind in the humid months as the timber swells, and because drawers carry weight and open against the runner, a small misalignment is quickly worked into a larger one if it is forced.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
A drawer that is forced shut wears its runners and works its front loose, and the same catch that started small becomes a drawer that jams or drops. The hardware is the cheap part; the damage from forcing it is what costs.
Clear the obstruction and realign the runner
Something has fallen in or the runner has shifted.
Replace a worn runner or guide
The hardware has worn and will not hold the drawer square.
Ease or replace a warped front or box
The timber itself has bowed and binds the opening.
06WHAT DECIDES THE FIX
The same symptom can lead to different repairs. These are the things that decide which way it goes.
- Whether the catch is at a fixed point, which suggests an obstruction.
- Whether the drawer drags on one side, which suggests a runner or guide.
- Whether it binds when empty or only when loaded, which separates weight from alignment.
- Whether it is worse in humid months, which points at the timber swelling.
- Whether the drawer still sits square, or has begun to twist in the opening.
07HOW A VISIT GOES
What to expect when we come out, and why the order matters.
Run the drawer
The drawer is opened and closed, empty and loaded, to see where it binds.
Inspect the runners
The runners, guides and stops are checked for wear, looseness or obstruction.
Check the timber
The front and box are sighted for bow and checked against the opening.
Correct the cause
Obstructions are cleared, runners realigned or replaced, or timber eased.
Close and confirm
The drawer is cycled repeatedly to confirm it closes fully and smoothly.
08KEEPING IT FROM RETURNING
Once it is fixed, these steps make the fault less likely to come back.
- Empty and check a drawer at the first sign of a catch, before forcing it.
- Keep runners clear of debris and small objects that can fall in.
- Do not overload drawers, which drags them out of square.
- Watch for seasonal binding and have the drawer eased rather than forced.
- Tighten loose fronts and runners when they first appear.
09Typical villa carpentry work
AED 150 – 400 for a door adjustment, AED 300 – 900 for leaf or frame repair
Indicative market ranges, not a quotation — a firm price follows inspection. Wardrobe hinge and runner replacement typically falls between AED 150 and AED 500 per item.
10QUESTIONS
- Why does it catch at the same point every time?
- Because something is in the way at that point — often debris or a small object fallen into the runner. A fixed catch is usually an obstruction rather than a worn runner.
- Is it the runner or the drawer?
- Usually the runner or guide. The drawer box itself rarely fails; what changes is the hardware that carries it, or the timber swelling against the opening.
- Why is it worse in summer?
- Because humidity swells the timber, so the drawer binds against the opening in the humid months and frees up again when the air dries out.
- Should I force it shut?
- No. Forcing a drawer bends the runners and works the front loose, turning a small catch into a jammed or dropped drawer.
- Can I fix it myself?
- Clearing an obstruction and emptying an overloaded drawer are safe first steps. Realigning or replacing runners and easing timber is better done by someone who works on joinery.
- Why does it close when empty but not when full?
- Because the weight pulls the drawer down onto the runner, so a drawer that is overloaded or already slightly out of square only shows the fault when it is loaded.
- What if the front has warped?
- Then the front or the box has bowed and is binding the opening, and the fix is to ease or replace the timber rather than to keep adjusting the hardware around it.
- How do you stop it happening again?
- By correcting the cause — clearing obstructions, realigning or replacing worn hardware, and easing any swollen timber — and by not overloading the drawer afterward.
- Is a catching drawer urgent?
- Not urgent, but it is worth fixing early. Every forced close wears the hardware further, and the repair grows from a quick realignment into a replacement.
- Do all the drawers need checking?
- Often the same cause affects more than one drawer, especially if the timber has swollen or the unit has settled, so the neighbouring drawers are worth a look while it is being done.
