The garden or pool circuit trips after rain

Garden lights, a pool pump or an outdoor socket circuit trips the RCD after rain — or after the irrigation runs — and resets once things dry out. Water is reaching something live outdoors and leaking current to earth.

Electrical

Burning smells, arcing and warm faceplates are treated as emergencies and take priority over everything else.

01LIKELY CAUSES

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.

  • Water inside a garden light fitting or junction box

Insulation resistance low on that branch; moisture inside the fitting.

  • Damaged buried cable

Fault persists on a section with no fittings; insulation test isolates it.

  • Outdoor socket or pool equipment enclosure not sealed

Water ingress found at the enclosure; fault clears when disconnected.

02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS

What you can safely check.

  • Note whether trips follow rain, irrigation or both.
  • Keep the circuit off while things are wet.
  • Look for fittings sitting in standing water or under sprinkler spray.
  • Do not open outdoor fittings yourself, especially when wet.

03WHAT WE MEASURE

We insulation-test the outdoor circuit and split it at junctions and fittings until the low-reading section is found, then inspect the fittings and enclosures on that section for water ingress and damage.

04IN A VILLA

Villa gardens combine buried cable, many light fittings, pool equipment and an irrigation system that soaks them regularly. Fittings placed in sprinkler paths or low spots fail first, and buried cable is easily nicked during landscaping work.

05THE FIX

Which repair, and when.

Earth leakage outdoors is a shock risk, especially near a pool, and water damage inside fittings only spreads.

  1. Dry, reseal or replace fittings

Water has entered specific fittings or boxes.

  2. Repair or replace buried cable

A cable section has failed insulation tests.

  3. Reposition fittings or irrigation heads

Fittings are being soaked by sprinklers.

06Typical villa electrical callout

AED 180 – 1,200 depending on scope

Socket, fitting and single-circuit faults sit low in the band. Fault tracing across multiple outdoor circuits and board work sit higher. Work requiring utility notification is scoped separately and discussed before it starts.

07QUESTIONS

Is it safe to keep resetting the RCD?
No. The RCD is detecting current leaking to earth. Keep the circuit off until the fault is found.
Why does it work once dry?
Dry insulation stops the leak; water bridges the gap again next time.
