Lights dim briefly when a large load starts
Every time an AC compressor, the water pump or the oven starts, the lights dip for a moment. A slight dip can be normal with large motors. A pronounced dip, flicker that lasts, or lights getting brighter as others dim, points at a connection or supply problem that should be checked.
Electrical
Burning smells, arcing and warm faceplates are treated as emergencies and take priority over everything else.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
High starting current from a motor with failing start components
Start current measured well above normal for that unit.
Loose or corroded neutral connection
Voltage swings between phases or circuits under load; neutral terminal inspected.
Voltage drop on long or undersized cable
Voltage at the far end of the circuit falls sharply under load.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Note which appliance causes the dip and how long it lasts.
- Check whether some lights brighten while others dim — report it promptly.
- Notice whether the dip has become more pronounced over time.
- Avoid running several large loads at exactly the same moment while the cause is found.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We log voltage at the board and at affected circuits while large loads start, measure motor starting currents, and inspect neutral and supply connections. The pattern of voltage changes separates a hungry motor from a wiring fault.
04IN A VILLA
Villas start several large motors — compressors, pumps, pool equipment — from one supply, often with long cable runs to roofs and gardens. Start-up dips compound, and a weak neutral connection shows up as lights behaving oddly across the house.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
A loose neutral can expose appliances to damaging voltage, and failing start components eventually stop a motor altogether.
Replace start components on the motor
One appliance draws excessive starting current.
Remake neutral or supply connections
Voltage behaviour points at a connection fault.
Upgrade cable on a long run
Voltage drop is excessive on a circuit.
06Typical villa electrical callout
AED 180 – 1,200 depending on scope
Socket, fitting and single-circuit faults sit low in the band. Fault tracing across multiple outdoor circuits and board work sit higher. Work requiring utility notification is scoped separately and discussed before it starts.
07QUESTIONS
- Is any dimming normal?
- A brief, slight dip as a large motor starts can be. Pronounced, lasting or uneven dimming is worth testing.
- Why do some lights get brighter?
- That can indicate a neutral problem, which should be checked promptly.
