Emergency response
A socket faceplate is warm or discoloured
A socket feels warm when nothing much is plugged in, or the plastic has turned brown around one of the holes. There may be a faint smell. Heat at a socket means current is passing through a poor connection, and it is one of the faults we treat as urgent.
Electrical
Burning smells, arcing and warm faceplates are treated as emergencies and take priority over everything else.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Loose terminal screw behind the socket
Terminal temperature high under load; screw loose on inspection.
Socket worn by heavy loads such as heaters or kettles
Contacts pitted or weakened; plug fits loosely.
Overloaded circuit through adaptors and extensions
Load measured above the socket's and circuit's rating.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Unplug everything from that socket and stop using it.
- Switch off the circuit if the socket is hot or smells of burning.
- Note what was plugged in — heavy loads point to wear or overload.
- Do not cover a discoloured socket and carry on using it.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
With the circuit isolated, we remove the socket, inspect terminals and cable ends for heat damage, and check other accessories on the same circuit. Under load, we measure temperature and current to confirm the circuit is sound once repaired.
04IN A VILLA
Villas have more heavy-load points — kitchens, laundries, outdoor equipment — and many sockets that see little use until a heater or tool goes in. A connection that loosened years ago may only show itself under a heavy load.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
A heating connection can melt insulation and start a fire inside the wall. This is not a fault to live with.
Remake the connection and replace the socket
Damage is limited to the accessory.
Cut back and remake heat-damaged cable
Cable insulation near the terminal is affected.
Add a dedicated circuit
The socket is regularly carrying a heavy load.
06Typical villa electrical callout
AED 180 – 1,200 depending on scope
Socket, fitting and single-circuit faults sit low in the band. Fault tracing across multiple outdoor circuits and board work sit higher. Work requiring utility notification is scoped separately and discussed before it starts.
07QUESTIONS
- Is a slightly warm socket normal?
- A socket carrying a heavy load may be faintly warm. One that is warm with little load, or discoloured, is not normal.
- What does an electrical callout typically cost?
- Our published band for a typical villa electrical callout is AED 180 – 1,200 depending on scope.
