Gate motor slow or stalling in heat
The gate runs normally in the morning and cooler months, but on hot afternoons it slows, stops partway or will not move until it cools down.
Gates & Automation
A gate that cannot be opened or secured is treated as urgent.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Motor thermal protection tripping
Motor hot; works again after cooling.
Weak capacitor
Capacitor tests below rating.
Gate stiff, making the motor work hard
Gate heavy to move manually.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Note the times it fails.
- Check the gate moves freely when released.
- Shade the motor cover if possible without blocking vents.
- Avoid repeated cycles when it stalls.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We release the gate and check it moves freely along its whole travel, test the motor’s capacitor and measure motor current through an opening and closing cycle. We also look at where the motor sits and how much afternoon sun it takes, because a motor that starts its run already hot reaches its thermal limit quickly.
04IN A VILLA
Villa gate motors sit on pillars and driveways in full afternoon sun, driving heavy, often clad gates that are used most during school runs, deliveries and evening returns — the hottest part of the day. Motors that cope in winter reach their limits in July.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
Repeated thermal trips shorten motor life and leave the gate stuck at busy times.
Replace the capacitor
It has weakened.
Free and service the gate
It is stiff.
Shade or relocate the motor
Heat exposure is extreme.
06Typical villa gate callout
AED 200 – 1,100 depending on the fault
Sensor alignment, remote programming and track clearing sit at the lower end. Capacitors, control boards and gearbox work sit higher. Full motor replacement is quoted separately after inspection.
07QUESTIONS
- Why only in summer?
- Heat pushes the motor to its thermal limit.
- Can a cover help?
- Shade helps if ventilation is kept.
- Is the motor too small?
- Sometimes, for heavy gates.
- Should we use it less?
- Fewer cycles help, but fix the cause.
