Motor hums but the gate does not move
Pressing the remote produces a hum or buzz from the motor housing, but the gate does not move. The motor is getting power but cannot turn, or it turns without driving the gate.
Gates & Automation
A gate that cannot be opened or secured is treated as urgent.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Start capacitor failed
Capacitor tested out of range; motor will not start under load.
Gate seized or obstructed
Gate stiff or immovable with the motor released.
Gearbox worn or stripped
Motor turns but gear output does not drive the gate.
Manual release partly engaged
Release mechanism checked.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Stop pressing the remote to avoid overheating the motor.
- Check the manual release is in the correct position.
- Look for anything wedged in the gate run.
- Switch the gate off at its isolator if it keeps humming.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We isolate the power, test the capacitor and motor windings, release the motor and check whether the gate moves freely by hand, and inspect gearbox and drive engagement.
04IN A VILLA
Villa gate motors sit in direct sun for most of the year, which shortens the life of capacitors and seals. Heavy villa gates also put more load on the motor and gearbox than lighter domestic gates elsewhere.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
Repeated humming against a stuck gate burns out the motor.
Replace the capacitor
It has failed.
Free and service the gate
The gate is seized.
Repair or replace the gearbox or motor
Drive components are worn.
06Typical villa gate callout
AED 200 – 1,100 depending on the fault
Sensor alignment, remote programming and track clearing sit at the lower end. Capacitors, control boards and gearbox work sit higher. Full motor replacement is quoted separately after inspection.
07QUESTIONS
- Can I open the gate manually?
- Yes, using the manual release as the installer showed you. Isolate power first.
- Is a new motor always needed?
- No. Capacitors and seized hinges are common causes and much cheaper.
