Sliding gate juddering along its run
The sliding gate shakes, jerks or makes a grinding sound as it travels, sometimes worse at one point along the run. The drive is fighting the gate. Juddering is wear in progress, and it gets worse.
Gates & Automation
A gate that cannot be opened or secured is treated as urgent.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Sand or debris in the track
Track inspected; juddering at the same point each time.
Worn or seized rollers or wheels
Wheels inspected for flats, wobble or bearing noise.
Rack misaligned with the motor gear
Gap between rack and pinion checked along the run.
Guide rollers at the top binding
Top guides inspected for wear or misalignment.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Sweep the track clear of sand and stones.
- Watch where along the run the judder happens.
- Listen for grinding from the wheels or the motor.
- Keep hands clear of the rack and wheels while the gate moves.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We release the motor and slide the gate by hand to feel for tight spots, inspect track, wheels and top guides, and check rack-to-gear engagement along the full run.
04IN A VILLA
Sliding gates on villa driveways collect wind-blown sand in the track, and heavy decorative gates load the wheels and bearings constantly. Sun heats the gate and rack, changing alignment through the day.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
Juddering wears the motor gear, rack and wheels quickly, turning a service job into a bigger repair.
Clean and level the track
Debris or track damage is the cause.
Replace wheels or guide rollers
They are worn or seized.
Realign or replace the rack
Engagement is uneven.
06Typical villa gate callout
AED 200 – 1,100 depending on the fault
Sensor alignment, remote programming and track clearing sit at the lower end. Capacitors, control boards and gearbox work sit higher. Full motor replacement is quoted separately after inspection.
07QUESTIONS
- Should I grease the track?
- No. Grease holds sand. Keep the track clean and dry.
- Is this treated as urgent?
- Normally scheduled, unless the gate can no longer be secured.
