The intercom screen is blank, but the gate works

The gate opens normally from the remote and the motor sounds healthy, but the intercom or video screen at the gate — or the monitor inside the house — is blank or dead. Visitors cannot be seen or heard, even though the gate itself still works. The gate and the entry system are separate, and here the entry system has lost power or its signal.

Gates & Automation

A gate that cannot be opened or secured is treated as urgent.

01LIKELY CAUSES

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.

  • Power lost to the entry panel

The panel is dead with no backlight or audio; a tripped supply or a failed power feed to the panel.

  • A wiring fault between the panel and the monitor

The panel has power but the indoor monitor is blank, or the video signal is lost along the run.

  • A failed monitor or panel

The panel or the indoor monitor itself has failed, which is confirmed by testing each end of the link.

  • A loose or corroded connection at the panel

A connection at the outdoor panel has worked loose or corroded in the heat, breaking the signal.

02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS

What you can safely check.

  • Confirm the gate itself still opens from the remote, so the gate motor is not the fault.
  • Check whether the indoor monitor is powered and whether the panel has any backlight.
  • Look for any obvious damage or water ingress at the outdoor panel.
  • Avoid opening the panel yourself — the gate supply and the panel are live.

03WHAT WE MEASURE

We test the power at the entry panel and the monitor, then check the link between them. A panel with no power points at its supply; a panel with power but no picture points at the wiring or the monitor. Each end is tested so the failed part is identified rather than swapped on a guess.

04IN A VILLA

The gate and the intercom are separate systems that share a location, and the outdoor panel takes the full sun, dust and heat. Connections at the panel corrode and power supplies fail quietly, while the gate keeps working — which is exactly why the screen can go blank while the gate still opens.

05THE FIX

Which repair, and when.

A blank screen means visitors cannot be seen or spoken to, and the villa loses the one thing the gate is there to protect — knowing who is at the door before it opens. The gate still works, but the security it is attached to does not.

  1. Restore power to the panel

The panel supply has tripped or failed.

  2. Repair the wiring or the connection

The link between the panel and the monitor is loose or corroded.

  3. Replace the failed panel or monitor

The panel or the monitor itself has failed.

06WHAT DECIDES THE FIX

The same symptom can lead to different repairs. These are the things that decide which way it goes.

  • Whether the panel has any backlight — a fully dead panel points at power, while a lit panel with no picture points at the signal or monitor.
  • Whether the indoor monitor is blank too — both ends dead points at power; one end dead points at the link.
  • What the connections look like — a corroded or loose connection at the panel is a repair, not a replacement.
  • The age of the system — an old panel or monitor is often replaced rather than repeatedly patched.
  • When it stopped — a failure right after rain or building work points at water or a disturbed cable.

07HOW A VISIT GOES

What to expect when we come out, and why the order matters.

  1. Confirm the gate still works

The gate is checked from the remote so the motor is ruled out first.

  2. Test power at the panel and monitor

Each end is checked for power to see where the system has gone dark.

  3. Check the link between them

The wiring and connections between the panel and the monitor are tested.

  4. Repair or replace the failed part

The supply, wiring or the failed panel or monitor is put right.

  5. Test audio and video

The call, the picture and the gate release are tested end to end.

08KEEPING IT FROM RETURNING

Once it is fixed, these steps make the fault less likely to come back.

  • Keep the outdoor panel sealed and check it for water ingress after rain.
  • Have the panel connections checked when the gate is serviced.
  • If the screen flickers or dims before it fails, get it checked rather than waiting for it to die.
  • Protect the panel and its power supply from direct sun where the housing allows.
  • After any gate or entry work, test the screen, the audio and the release together.
  • After any power interruption, check that the intercom still shows video and releases the gate, not just that the gate opens.

09Typical villa gate callout

AED 200 – 1,100 depending on the fault

Sensor alignment, remote programming and track clearing sit at the lower end. Capacitors, control boards and gearbox work sit higher. Full motor replacement is quoted separately after inspection.

10QUESTIONS

Is the gate itself broken?
Usually not. If the gate still opens from the remote, the motor is fine. A blank screen is a fault in the entry system — its power, wiring or the panel or monitor.
Why does the gate work but not the screen?
Because they are separate systems. The gate runs on its own motor and control, while the intercom has its own power and signal, and one can fail without the other.
Could it be a simple power problem?
Often it is. A tripped supply or a failed power feed to the panel is a common cause, and it is the first thing checked.
Does a blank screen mean the gate is less secure?
It means you cannot see or speak to whoever is at the gate, which is the whole point of the entry system. The gate may still open, but the security check is gone.
Why does the gate open but the screen stay blank?
Because the gate and the intercom are separate systems with their own power. The gate motor can be healthy while the entry panel has lost power or signal.
Could a power cut have caused it?
It can. A power interruption can trip the panel supply or reset the system, which is why the panel power is checked early in the diagnosis.
Is the indoor monitor or the outdoor panel more likely to fail?
The outdoor panel is the one in the weather, so it and its connections fail more often, but the indoor monitor is tested too, so the right one is replaced.
