Controller lost its programme after a power cut

After a power interruption the controller is showing the wrong time, a default programme, or nothing at all. Zones are watering at odd times or not at all. The controller should hold its programme through an outage; when it does not, the backup or the unit has a problem.

Irrigation & Landscape

A valve stuck open is treated as urgent because of the water it wastes.

01LIKELY CAUSES

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.

  • Backup battery flat or missing

Battery compartment checked and battery tested.

  • Power surge damaged the controller

Display erratic or dead with power present at the unit.

  • Transformer or supply failed

Output voltage measured at the transformer.

  • Moisture inside the controller enclosure

Corrosion or condensation on the board or terminals.

02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS

What you can safely check.

  • Check whether the controller has power and shows a display.
  • Note the time shown and whether it is counting.
  • Photograph the programme settings once restored, for next time.
  • Check the breaker that feeds the controller has not tripped.

03WHAT WE MEASURE

We test the supply and transformer, check the backup battery, inspect the enclosure for moisture, and test station outputs once the programme is set. A controller that fails repeatedly after outages is checked against the supply circuit.

04IN A VILLA

Villa controllers are often mounted outdoors or in a garage, exposed to heat and occasional moisture, and on a circuit that may trip with garden electrics after rain. Each reset can mean days of the garden watering at the wrong time.

05THE FIX

Which repair, and when.

Watering at the wrong times wastes water and stresses plants, and a dead controller leaves the garden unwatered in the heat.

  1. Replace the backup battery and reprogram

The battery is flat or missing.

  2. Repair the supply or replace the transformer

Power to the unit is at fault.

  3. Replace the controller

The unit is damaged or corroded.

06Typical villa irrigation callout

AED 180 – 900 depending on the fault

Controller, battery and single-solenoid faults sit at the lower end. Buried line location and repair sits higher and depends on where the fault turns out to be.

07QUESTIONS

Can I reprogram it myself?
Yes, if you have the settings. We can set a seasonal programme and leave a written copy.
Is a smart controller worth it?
It can help, but it still needs a reliable supply and correctly set zones.
