Dry brown patches in the lawn
Most of the lawn is green but some patches turn brown and stay that way, often in arcs, between sprinkler heads or near edges and paths. Watering longer greens the rest of the lawn but does little for the patches.
Irrigation & Landscape
A valve stuck open is treated as urgent because of the water it wastes.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Coverage gaps between heads
Catch-cup test shows little water reaching the patch.
Head blocked or not rotating
Head stuck, spraying in one direction or not popping up.
Compacted or water-repellent soil
Water runs off the patch rather than soaking in.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Run the zone and watch whether water reaches the patch.
- Check heads near the patch for blockage or damage.
- Push a screwdriver into the soil: hard ground suggests compaction.
- Avoid simply increasing run times for the whole zone.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We check each head’s rotation and throw, run a simple coverage test with containers across the lawn, and test soil penetration. That separates an irrigation gap from a soil problem.
04IN A VILLA
Villa lawns are often laid in irregular shapes around pools, paths and planting, with heads placed before the final layout. Foot traffic around play areas and the pool compacts soil, and summer heat exposes every gap in coverage.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
Patches spread in summer, and longer run times to compensate waste water elsewhere.
Repair or replace failed heads
Heads are blocked or stuck.
Adjust head spacing or nozzles
Coverage leaves gaps.
Aerate and treat the soil
Compaction prevents water soaking in.
06Typical villa irrigation callout
AED 180 – 900 depending on the fault
Controller, battery and single-solenoid faults sit at the lower end. Buried line location and repair sits higher and depends on where the fault turns out to be.
07QUESTIONS
- Should I water longer?
- Not until the cause is found; longer runs overwater the rest.
- Why do patches form in arcs?
- They often match gaps between sprinkler throws.
- Can aeration help?
- Yes, where soil is compacted.
- Is it a lawn disease?
- Sometimes; irrigation is checked first because it is the most common cause.
