Irrigation pump not starting
The controller shows a zone running, valves click, but sprinklers barely dribble or nothing comes out. The irrigation pump, often in a plant room or beside a tank, stays silent or hums briefly.
Irrigation & Landscape
A valve stuck open is treated as urgent because of the water it wastes.
Call nowRequest pump check on WhatsApp01LIKELY CAUSES
What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Pump start relay not energising
No signal at the relay when the controller calls a zone.
Pump motor or capacitor fault
Motor hums or does not run with power applied.
Tripped supply or no water at the pump
Breaker off, or tank empty.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Check the irrigation tank has water if fed from one.
- Check the pump’s breaker at the board.
- Listen at the pump when a zone starts.
- Do not run the pump dry repeatedly.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We check the controller’s pump start output, the relay, the pump supply and the motor. Measuring at each step shows where the chain breaks between controller and pump.
04IN A VILLA
Larger villa gardens often use a dedicated irrigation pump fed from a tank, controlled by a relay from the irrigation controller. Relays and capacitors in hot plant rooms fail with age.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
Without the pump, gardens go unwatered in heat, and repeated attempts to start can damage the motor.
Replace the start relay
The relay has failed.
Repair the pump motor or capacitor
The pump does not run.
Restore supply or water
The pump has no power or no water.
06Typical villa irrigation callout
AED 180 – 900 depending on the fault
Controller, battery and single-solenoid faults sit at the lower end. Buried line location and repair sits higher and depends on where the fault turns out to be.
07QUESTIONS
- Why do valves click but no water comes?
- Valves open, but the pump is not providing pressure.
- Is it the controller?
- Sometimes; we test its pump output.
- Can the pump run dry?
- Running dry damages it; check the tank level.
- Does every villa have an irrigation pump?
- No; some run from mains pressure.
