Scheduled visit

AC switching on and off every few minutes

The compressor starts, runs for a few minutes and stops, then starts again shortly after — all day. Rooms may feel cool but clammy, and the outdoor unit clicks on and off more than you would expect. Short cycling wears components and leaves humidity in the air.

Air Conditioning

AC failure in summer is treated as an emergency and scheduled ahead of routine work.

01LIKELY CAUSES

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.

  • Thermostat in the wrong place

Thermostat sits in a cold air stream or near a grille, satisfying itself quickly.

  • Unit oversized for the space

Capacity compared with the room load; the unit reaches set point too quickly.

  • Protection device cutting in

Pressure or current readings show a protection tripping before the room is satisfied.

02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS

What you can safely check.

  • Time the on and off periods for an hour.
  • Look at where the thermostat is mounted relative to grilles and sunlight.
  • Check filters and that nothing blocks the outdoor unit.
  • Note whether the cycling started after a change to rooms or units.

03WHAT WE MEASURE

We log run and rest times, check the thermostat position and calibration, and measure pressures and current while the unit runs. Comparing unit capacity with the room tells us whether the system is simply too big for the space it serves.

04IN A VILLA

Villa renovations often merge or split rooms without changing the AC, leaving units mismatched to their spaces. Thermostats are also moved during decoration and end up where cold air blows straight onto them.

05THE FIX

Which repair, and when.

Frequent starts wear contactors and compressors and leave rooms humid. Running costs also rise because start-up is the least efficient part of each cycle.

  1. Relocate or recalibrate the thermostat

It is reading the supply air rather than the room.

  2. Adjust controls or fan settings

    Settings cause premature switching.

  3. Address the protection trip

Pressure or current problems are stopping the unit.

06Typical villa AC callout

AED 180 – 900 depending on the fault

Diagnostic visit and measurement are quoted up front. Coil cleaning, fan motors and control faults sit at the lower end; compressor and refrigerant work at the upper. Anything involving parts is priced after inspection, never before.

07QUESTIONS

Is short cycling dangerous?
Not immediately, but it shortens equipment life.
Can a bigger unit cool better?
Too big a unit cools quickly but dehumidifies poorly and cycles often.
Why does the room feel clammy?
Short runs do not remove enough moisture from the air.
