Emergency response

AC cools for a while, then blows warm

The unit starts well, the room gets cooler, and then — fifteen or twenty minutes in — the air coming out of the grille turns lukewarm. Leave it and it may come back on its own an hour later. In most villas we see, this is the outdoor condenser protecting itself from overheating, and the fix is usually at the condenser rather than inside the house.

Air Conditioning

AC failure in summer is treated as an emergency and scheduled ahead of routine work.

01LIKELY CAUSES

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.

  • Condenser coil packed with dust

Fins visibly matted, and the air leaving the condenser is far hotter than it should be for the outside temperature.

  • Condenser fan slowing or stopping

Fan turns slowly or stalls while the compressor is still trying to run; we test the fan motor and its capacitor.

  • Refrigerant overcharge or non-condensables after a poor previous repair

Head pressure high even with a clean coil and a healthy fan — measured with gauges, not guessed.

02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS

What you can safely check.

  • Look at the outdoor unit while it is running: is the fan turning steadily?
  • Note how long it cools before it stops, and whether it is worse in the afternoon.
  • Check that nothing is stacked against the condenser or blocking its airflow.
  • Do not hose the coil yourself on a roof unit — water near live connections is a risk.

03WHAT WE MEASURE

We measure supply and return air at the indoor unit to confirm the symptom, then go to the condenser with gauges and a thermometer. Head pressure, the temperature of the air leaving the coil and the fan's current draw tell us whether the unit is overheating and why. Only once the cause is clear do we clean, replace or adjust anything.

04IN A VILLA

Villa condensers often sit on a flat roof in full sun, out of sight, collecting dust from surrounding plots. A coil that cannot reject heat drives the compressor's temperature up until its thermal protection cuts it out — which feels exactly like the unit giving up after twenty minutes. Because nobody sees roof units, this pattern is often tolerated for months.

05THE FIX

Which repair, and when.

A compressor repeatedly cutting out on heat is working at the limit of its design. Left for a summer, it shortens the compressor's life considerably — and a compressor is the most expensive part of the system to replace.

  1. Coil clean and fan service

The coil is blocked and the fan tests healthy. This resolves a large share of cases.

  2. Fan motor or capacitor replacement

The fan is weak or stalling under load.

  3. Recover and recharge refrigerant correctly

Pressures show an overcharge or contamination from a previous repair.

06Typical villa AC callout

AED 180 – 900 depending on the fault

Diagnostic visit and measurement are quoted up front. Coil cleaning, fan motors and control faults sit at the lower end; compressor and refrigerant work at the upper. Anything involving parts is priced after inspection, never before.

07QUESTIONS

Does it just need more gas?
Rarely, in this pattern. Adding gas to a unit that is overheating can make it worse. Pressures and temperatures decide whether refrigerant is involved.
Why does it come back on later?
Once the compressor cools, its thermal protection resets and it restarts — until it overheats again.
