Upstairs much warmer than downstairs
The ground floor is comfortable but upstairs bedrooms never quite reach the set temperature, especially in late afternoon and evening. The difference is worst in summer and in rooms under the roof or facing west. Nothing has failed outright; the house simply is not balanced.
Air Conditioning
AC failure in summer is treated as an emergency and scheduled ahead of routine work.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Heat gain through the roof and west walls
Surface temperatures of ceilings and walls measured higher upstairs.
Air distribution favouring the ground floor
Airflow at upstairs grilles lower than downstairs on the same system.
Leaking or poorly insulated ducts in the roof void
Duct joints and insulation inspected; temperature rise along the run measured.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Close curtains or blinds on west and south windows in the afternoon.
- Check that upstairs return grilles are clear.
- Note the temperature difference between floors at the same time of day.
- Do not close downstairs grilles fully on a shared system without advice; it can upset the balance further.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We measure supply temperatures and airflow at grilles on both floors, check the roof void for duct condition and insulation, and record surface temperatures on upstairs ceilings and west walls. That shows whether the problem is distribution, heat gain or both.
04IN A VILLA
Two-storey villas have bedrooms directly under a roof that takes full sun, while cool air naturally settles downstairs. Ducts serving upstairs rooms often run through the hottest part of the house — the roof void — where losses are greatest.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
Upstairs units run continuously in summer, raising bills and wear, while bedrooms stay uncomfortable at night.
Rebalance airflow
Dampers or grilles favour the ground floor.
Repair and insulate ducts
Duct runs in the roof void lose cooling.
Reduce heat gain
Roof and window gains overwhelm the system.
06Typical villa AC callout
AED 180 – 900 depending on the fault
Diagnostic visit and measurement are quoted up front. Coil cleaning, fan motors and control faults sit at the lower end; compressor and refrigerant work at the upper. Anything involving parts is priced after inspection, never before.
07QUESTIONS
- Does upstairs need a bigger unit?
- Not always. Balance and heat gain are usually checked first.
- Will roof insulation help?
- Reducing heat gain through the roof can make a noticeable difference.
- Can dampers fix it?
- Rebalancing helps where air is being sent to the wrong floor.
