A room lost power after building work
After painting, a kitchen refit, new shelves or ceiling work, a room or group of sockets and lights no longer works. Breakers may look normal, or one may trip when reset.
Electrical
Burning smells, arcing and warm faceplates are treated as emergencies and take priority over everything else.
Call nowRequest fault tracing on WhatsApp01LIKELY CAUSES
What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Cable damaged by a screw, nail or drill
Insulation test shows a fault on that circuit; location traced near new fixings.
Connection left open in a back box
Accessory removed during decorating and not reconnected correctly.
Circuit switched off or rearranged at the board
Board labels compared with what was changed.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Check the board for a tripped or switched-off breaker.
- Ask the contractor what they removed, moved or fixed.
- Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips immediately.
- Keep away from any new fixing that looks close to a switch or socket line.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We test the affected circuit for continuity and insulation, then trace where the fault is relative to recent work — new fixings, moved accessories or opened ceilings. Finding the location means less opening of new finishes.
04IN A VILLA
Villa renovations often involve several trades working on finished walls, and cable routes are rarely recorded. Shelving, TV mounts and curtain tracks are common places for a screw to meet a cable.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
A damaged cable inside a wall can become a shock or fire risk, even if it currently trips the breaker.
Repair the damaged cable section
A fixing has damaged the cable.
Remake the connection
An accessory was left disconnected.
Correct board changes and labels
The circuit was rearranged.
06Typical villa electrical callout
AED 180 – 1,200 depending on scope
Socket, fitting and single-circuit faults sit low in the band. Fault tracing across multiple outdoor circuits and board work sit higher. Work requiring utility notification is scoped separately and discussed before it starts.
07QUESTIONS
- Was it the contractor’s fault?
- Often the timing points that way; tracing confirms where the damage is.
- Will you need to open the new finish?
- Sometimes locally; tracing keeps it to a minimum.
- How can it be avoided next time?
- Using a cable detector and recording routes helps.
