A fixing pulled out of the wall, taking plaster with it

A shelf, curtain bracket or mount has come away, leaving a crater of plaster and a plug hanging out. Putting a bigger plug in the same hole rarely holds for long. The fixing was wrong for what the wall is made of, or for the load it carried.

01LIKELY CAUSES

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.

  • Plug unsuited to hollow blockwork or gypsum

Wall material identified; plug never reached solid material.

  • Load heavier than the fixing was rated for

Item weight compared with fixing capacity.

  • Fixing too close to an edge or a void

Hole breaks into a cavity or near a corner.

02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS

What you can safely check.

  • Check what the wall is — solid, hollow block or gypsum board.
  • Weigh or estimate what will hang there.
  • Check for pipes or cables before drilling new holes.
  • Keep the item down until it can be re-fixed properly.

03WHAT WE MEASURE

We identify the wall construction, scan for services, and choose fixings rated for the load and the substrate. The damaged area is made good before the item is re-hung.

04IN A VILLA

Villa walls mix concrete, solid and hollow blockwork and gypsum partitions, sometimes on the same wall. A fixing that works on one section fails on the next, which is why the same item comes down repeatedly.

05THE FIX

Which repair, and when.

Repeated re-fixing in the same hole enlarges the damage, and heavy items falling are a hazard.

  1. Make good and re-fix with the correct fixing

The wall is sound and the fixing was wrong.

  2. Move the fixing to solid material

The original position was over a void.

  3. Add backing or a batten

    The load needs spreading.

Indicative market ranges, not a quotation — a firm price follows inspection. Most accumulated lists are a half or full day. Standard fixings and consumables are included; anything specialist is agreed with you before it is bought.
