Pool or fountain pump trips the RCD at start-up
The RCD trips the moment the pool, fountain or water-feature pump starts, in any weather. Resetting works until the pump starts again. Other outdoor circuits are fine.
Electrical
Burning smells, arcing and warm faceplates are treated as emergencies and take priority over everything else.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Insulation breakdown in the pump motor
Insulation test on the motor shows leakage to earth.
Damaged or wet supply cable
Cable insulation test and inspection along its route.
Water in a junction box or connector
Box opened and found wet or corroded.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Leave the pump circuit off and the RCD reset for other circuits.
- Do not touch the pump or its connections while wet.
- Note whether trips began after rain, cleaning or new equipment.
- Check whether the pump’s plug or connector is exposed to water.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We disconnect and insulation-test the pump motor, its cable and each junction separately. That identifies whether the motor or the wiring is leaking current, before any part is replaced.
04IN A VILLA
Villa pool plant and water features sit outdoors, often in pits or enclosures where water collects. Pumps run for many hours a day in heat, and junction boxes near them are exposed to splash and irrigation.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
Leakage near water is a shock risk. The RCD is doing its job; the fault needs fixing, not bypassing.
Replace or rewind the motor
The motor is leaking to earth.
Replace the damaged cable
The supply cable has failed.
Replace and reseal junction boxes
Water has entered connections.
06Typical villa electrical callout
AED 180 – 1,200 depending on scope
Socket, fitting and single-circuit faults sit low in the band. Fault tracing across multiple outdoor circuits and board work sit higher. Work requiring utility notification is scoped separately and discussed before it starts.
07QUESTIONS
- Can I bypass the RCD to run the pump?
- No. It is protecting people near water.
- Is it the pump or the wiring?
- Testing each part separately tells us.
- Will the pool be fine without the pump for a few days?
- Water quality suffers quickly in heat; arrange the repair promptly.
