Water stays cloudy despite balanced chemistry
The strip or kit says pH and chlorine are where they should be, yet the water has a milky haze and the floor at the deep end looks soft. Balanced numbers on the usual two readings do not mean the water is being cleaned — cloudiness is more often a filtration problem than a chemical one.
Pool Maintenance
Normally scheduled. Equipment failures that would leave the pool stagnant are handled sooner.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Filter media exhausted or channelling
Pressure gauge reads normal but the return water is not visibly clearer than the pool.
Pump running too few hours for the season
Timer schedule set for winter while the water is at summer temperature.
High calcium hardness or total dissolved solids
Extended water test beyond pH and chlorine shows readings out of range.
Combined chlorine building up
Free and total chlorine differ noticeably; a chlorine smell despite a "good" reading.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Note the pump run hours set on the timer and when they were last changed.
- Write down the filter pressure with the pump running after a backwash.
- Check whether the haze clears overnight with the pump off or gets worse.
- Keep the last few test results so the pattern can be read.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We run an extended water test — free and combined chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, stabiliser and dissolved solids — then look at the filter itself: media condition, backwash behaviour and whether water is bypassing it. Run time is checked against water temperature and bather load before anything is added to the water.
04IN A VILLA
A villa pool is often looked after by whoever is home, with a test strip that only reads two or three values. Summer water temperatures push chemical demand and filtration needs well past what a winter timer setting delivers, and fine dust blown in from open plots settles faster than a small filter can clear it.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
Cloudy water hides the floor, which is a safety issue in its own right, and the conditions that cause the haze tend to lead to algae next.
Adjust run time and correct the out-of-range readings
Filtration is sound and the extended test shows the gap.
Deep clean or replace the filter media
The media is exhausted, caked or channelling.
Partial drain and refill
Dissolved solids or stabiliser are too high to correct chemically.
06Typical villa pool servicing
Quoted per visit or on a regular schedule
Depends on pool volume, equipment set and visit frequency. Equipment repairs are separate and quoted after inspection. We do not carry out pool construction or full renovation.
07QUESTIONS
- Why does the shop test say it is fine?
- Most quick tests read only pH and chlorine. The cause of cloudy water is often in a reading they do not take, or in the filter rather than the water.
- Should I add clarifier?
- It can help a working filter catch fine particles, but it will not fix a filter that is not doing its job.
