Musty smell when the AC starts
For the first few minutes after the AC comes on, the room smells damp or stale — sometimes described as old socks or a wet cellar. The smell fades as the unit runs and comes back the next time it starts. It is often strongest in rooms that are cooled only occasionally, such as guest rooms.
Air Conditioning
AC failure in summer is treated as an emergency and scheduled ahead of routine work.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Growth on the indoor coil
Coil face visibly coated or discoloured when the panel is opened.
Standing water in the condensate tray
Tray holds water after the unit stops, with slime at the outlet.
Dirty filters and fan wheel
Filters clogged and the blower wheel coated with dust that has absorbed moisture.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Take out and wash the filters; note how dirty they were.
- Notice whether the smell is in one room or all rooms on the same system.
- Run the unit in fan-only mode for a while after cooling to help dry the coil.
- Avoid spraying household fragrances into the unit; they mask the smell and can damage components.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
We open the indoor unit and inspect the coil face, tray, drain and fan wheel. Where ductwork is involved we check the return and the duct immediately after the unit. The aim is to find where moisture sits long enough to grow anything, because cleaning without fixing that only resets the clock.
04IN A VILLA
Villas often have rooms that are cooled only now and then — guest suites, majlis, upstairs studies. A coil that gets wet and then sits idle in a warm house is ideal for growth. Long ducted systems in hot ceiling voids also pick up humidity that settles where airflow is weakest.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
The smell itself is unpleasant rather than urgent, but the growth behind it keeps spreading across the coil, reducing airflow and cooling. Dirty coils also make the unit work harder through summer.
Coil and tray cleaning with drain flush
Growth is on the coil and in the tray.
Fan wheel cleaning
The blower wheel is coated and adds to the smell.
Correct the drain fall
Water stands in the tray because it cannot drain away.
06Typical villa AC callout
AED 180 – 900 depending on the fault
Diagnostic visit and measurement are quoted up front. Coil cleaning, fan motors and control faults sit at the lower end; compressor and refrigerant work at the upper. Anything involving parts is priced after inspection, never before.
07QUESTIONS
- Is the musty smell harmful?
- It indicates growth inside the unit. Cleaning it is sensible, particularly in bedrooms.
- Will new filters fix it?
- They help, but the smell usually comes from the coil and tray, which need cleaning too.
- Why only in some rooms?
- Rooms cooled less often let their units sit wet, so growth starts there first.
