Emergency response
AC isolator warm or discoloured
The rotary isolator switch beside an outdoor AC unit feels warm, has brown marks around the knob or cover, or smells of hot plastic. The AC may still run normally, or trip intermittently.
Electrical
Burning smells, arcing and warm faceplates are treated as emergencies and take priority over everything else.

What usually sits behind this symptom, and what tells one cause from another.
Loose termination inside the isolator
Thermal reading at the isolator higher than the cable either side.
Isolator rated too close to the load
Rating compared with the unit’s running and starting current.
Moisture or dust inside a degraded enclosure
Enclosure cracked or seal failed on inspection.
02BEFORE ANYONE VISITS
What you can safely check.
- Switch off the AC from the controller, then at the board breaker for that unit.
- Do not open the isolator cover.
- Note any smell, marks or noises from the isolator.
- Keep children away from the outdoor unit area.
03WHAT WE MEASURE
With the circuit isolated, we open the isolator and inspect terminals for heat damage, then check the rating against the unit’s current. Thermal imaging under load, after repair, confirms the connection is no longer running hot.
04IN A VILLA
Villa outdoor units sit on roofs and side yards in full sun, so their isolators start from a high temperature before any current flows. Large AC loads, years of heat cycling and dust make loose terminations more likely than on an indoor switch.
05THE FIX
Which repair, and when.
A hot connection can continue to deteriorate and become a fire risk. This is not a wait-and-see item.
Replace the isolator and remake terminations
Heat damage is found.
Fit a suitably rated, weatherproof isolator
The existing one is undersized or degraded.
Check the circuit back to the board
Damage suggests a wider problem.
06Typical villa electrical callout
AED 180 – 1,200 depending on scope
Socket, fitting and single-circuit faults sit low in the band. Fault tracing across multiple outdoor circuits and board work sit higher. Work requiring utility notification is scoped separately and discussed before it starts.
07QUESTIONS
- Is a warm isolator dangerous?
- Heat at a connection is a warning; switch off and have it checked.
- Can I still use the AC?
- Not until the isolator is checked.
- Why do isolators fail outdoors?
- Heat, UV, dust and large loads wear them over time.
